Help Me, I’m Afraid Of The Dentist!

North Tomball Sleep Dentistry

If you fear going to the dentist, you are far from alone. You may be among the millions of Americans coping with what we call dental anxiety, or even phobia. At The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston we don’t want you or anyone else putting their dental health at risk by avoiding regular checkups and cleanings. Sedation dentistry may be the answer you’ve been looking for.

Sedation dentistry means using one of several options to put you in a state of relaxation so you can get the care you deserve. We offer three types:

  • Nitrous oxide. This is the first-level option. Better known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide works quickly and wears off quickly. It is very effective. It may or may not make you laugh, but should relax you enough for your appointment.
  • Oral conscious sedation. You take a prescribed sedative an hour or so before your appointment. It will not make you sleep, but it will make you drowsy, and you will not be very aware of your surroundings.
  • IV sedation. As the name suggests, this is administered intravenously. It’s the strongest sedation we have. You may think you’re completely unconscious, but you’ll be awake, and even able to answer questions, the entire time. You probably won’t remember much of the procedure afterwards.

It takes a while for oral conscious sedation and IV sedation to wear off. You will be required to have a ride to and from our office for both of these.

Sedation dentistry from The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston helps anxious patients maintain good dental health. We’ve treated patients from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein, who also come to our practice for complete general dentistry, and much more. Call our office to schedule an appointment today!

Trouble Getting Numb For Dental Treatment?

gentle dentist Houston

For most of us, getting a cavity filled is not exactly a highlight of the day. But thanks to modern anesthesia, like what we use at The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston, it’s really just an inconvenience.

Some people, though, are resistant to local anesthesia like lidocaine. That makes what is ordinarily simple, like filling a cavity, a real challenge: the tooth needs to be fixed, but the level of pain can go off the charts.

The patient may be filled with local anesthestic, but for them, it’s like it’s not even there. A slow response to lidocaine is fairly common, and a second injection usually takes care of it. But sometimes it just doesn’t work.

There has been research into this but no conclusive findings. Some theorize that the tissue in certain people doesn’t absorb anesthetic they way it does in most. Another possibility is that some of us have nerves in slightly different places than in most. But no one knows for sure.

All of this is cold comfort to anyone who who has trouble getting numb for their dental work. If this sounds like you or someone you know, please let us know at The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston. We will find a solution to your issues. Patients from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein seek us out for complete general and cosmetic dentistry. Call for an appointment today!

Just Chill

Houston sedation dentistry

If you are one of those people who gets tense just thinking about your next dental checkup, you may benefit from sedation dentistry offered here at The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston.

Millions of people stress out when they have to see the dentist. Some of them would rather skip the dentist altogether than sit down for a checkup. Trust us, this is a bad idea: it puts your dental health at risk.

There are lots of reasons why people develop anxiety or phobia over dental care. Whatever the cause, we want you to get the treatment you need, without needless anxiety.

We offer three types of sedation:

  • Nitrous Oxide. You also know this as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for more than a century and is highly effective.
  • Oral conscious sedation. You take a sedative an hour or so before the appointment. You won’t sleep, but will be in a deeply relaxed state. When the appointment is over, someone will have to drive you home.
  • IV Sedation. As the name suggests, this is a sedative that is administered intravenously. You won’t sleep with this on, either, but will be in a deeply relaxed state. You’ll need an escort for a ride here and back.

Whatever it is that stresses you about the dentist, we don’t want you to compromise your dental health by skipping checkups. Sedation dentistry from The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston may be just for you. People come to us from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein for complete general dentistry, and much more.
