Think It’s Not Necessary To Replace Missing Back Teeth?

dental implants HoustonSometimes when people lose a back tooth they wonder whether they should bother doing anything about it. After all, the gap doesn’t show when they smile and there are other teeth to do the chewing. Why not leave it be and save some money? Actually, there are several very good reasons to replace a back tooth with a dental implant from The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston.

  1. The adjacent tooth (or teeth) may start shifting. If a tooth tilts, moves, or rotates, it can impact the bite. The unopposed tooth can also move, though it generally moves outward from the bone (over-eruption). Teeth that are displaced can become more vulnerable to gum disease, decay, or TMJ pain.
  2. The underlying bone will begin to atrophy. Without the tooth root, the jaw bone shrinks. This changes the dimensions of the face and gives it a sunk-in look due to a decline in supporting bone. The vertical shortening progresses and becomes more pronounced as you get older.
  3. There will be additional stress on the teeth that take over the chewing functions. This can bring about excessive wear, fracture, or pain.

If you have a missing back tooth and want to learn about dental implants, call us at The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston. People from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein come to us for implants and for comprehensive general dentistry services. Schedule an appointment today!

Smokeless Is Not Harmless For Houston Tobacco Chewers

dental implants Houston

Cigarette sales have decreased in the past decade, and at The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston we won’t kid you: we’re happy about that. But some people have switched to smokeless products, on the assumption that smokeless tobacco is harmless.

This is absolutely not true. No matter its form, tobacco is dangerous stuff.

We encounter the consequences of smokeless tobacco use because many occur in the mouth. Oral cancer, mouth lesions, gum disease and tooth decay are the most common dental problems caused by smokeless tobacco.

Keeping a pinch between your cheek and gum all day is a bad idea, period. Tobacco erodes the teeth and also causes the gums to pull away from teeth.

Smokeless tobacco increases the risk for several types of life-threatening cancers including those of the mouth, gums, lips, tongue, and throat. Oral cancers can be as deadly as lung cancer and usually require surgery.

These are the main dental risks of smokeless tobacco. In addition, there are two other biggies: addiction and heart disease, though those are topics for another day.

If you have any concerns about the state of your oral health, be sure to talk to us about it at The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston. Patients from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein come to our office for general and cosmetic dentistry. Call to schedule an appointment today!

What If My Dental Crown Cracks, Comes Loose, or Comes Off?

what to do if dental crown comes off HoustonDental crowns are restorations that are cemented over a tooth that has been repaired, and we place a lot of them at The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston.

While the cement is strong and reliable, crowns have been known to come off. It may have loosened or come off while brushing or flossing, or eating something sticky.  Here is what to do if your crown comes off.

There are three steps:

  1. First things first: find your crown if it has come off entirely. If you can’t find it, don’t worry. We can make a replacement.
  2. Next, give us a call. Even if we didn’t do the original we can reattach it.
  3. If your crown comes off after business hours, use denture adhesive to get it back in place temporarily. Do not use ordinary glue! You can find denture adhesive at a drugstore.

At The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston we place a lot of dental crowns, and with great success. People from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein come to our office for our complete cosmetic dentistry. Schedule an appointment today!

5 Ways To Prevent A Cracked Tooth

cost of dental crowns North TomballCracked teeth can be painful, unattractive, and pricey to repair. In this post from The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston, we offer tips to keep your teeth whole and strong.

Don’t chew on hard things. Steer clear of ice, hard candies, hard nuts, and even popcorn (the kernels can do damage). Also be wary of pitted fruits — that peach may be soft, but if you bite hard into the pit you could damage a tooth.

  • Always wear a mouthguard when playing sports. If you enjoy pick-up basketball games, indoor soccer leagues, rec center flag football, and many other activities, you should be using a well-fitting mouth protector.
  • Never use your teeth as a tool. Take a minute to find a pair of scissors before you tear open a package of lunch meat instead of your teeth. Use a nutcracker for nuts. A quality dental crown can cost hundreds of dollars.
  • Don’t grind your teeth. If you know or suspect that you are a tooth grinder, ask us about a nighttime mouth guard. People often do it in their sleep and aren’t aware of it. Frequent headaches or jaw pain can be a symptom of teeth grinding.
  • See us for regular check-ups. We can alert you to conditions that might predispose you to cracked teeth, such as having an uneven chewing surface or brittle teeth. We may also discover tiny cracks you aren’t aware of. Take care of these cracks before the whole tooth is in danger.

If you already have a cracked tooth, please let us know at The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston. People from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein trust us with their smiles! We offer general and restorative dentistry. Call for an appointment today!

A Missing Tooth Can Lead to Bone Loss

East Spring tooth implants

Dental implants from The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston support teeth so lifelike, patients have been known to forget some of their teeth aren’t real. That’s now natural their look and function is.

Those simple facts are enough to make most people choose dental implants if they need to replace one or more of their teeth. Then they learn that in addition to those benefits, implants can actually preserve and promote healthy bone mass in their jaws.

Dental Implants and Bone Loss

An unfortunate consequence of losing teeth is that the bone surrounding the lost tooth begins to atrophy. This begins almost immediately, and is usually noticeable within a year or so. The person’s face takes on a shrunken or sagging appearance. The more teeth that are missing, the more pronounced it is.

This happens because of the missing tooth root. But because dental implants are physically attached to the jaw, they mimic the root. The natural biting and chewing motions stimulate the bone and encourage new tissue to grow around the implant.

One dental implant can support one artificial tooth, and several can support a bridge, and even a full dental arch. At The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston we have placed them in patients from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein. They also come to us for comprehensive general dentistry. Please give our office a call to schedule an appointment today!

7 Ways Bonding Can Beautify

North Tomball Cosmetic Dentist

Dental bonding is a popular cosmetic dentistry procedure at The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston, but there are many patients who don’t know exactly what it is. In this blog post we explain seven ways dental bonding is used in cosmetic dentistry.

The procedure uses a tooth-colored material that is applied to the teeth while soft, like putty. Next it is hardened with a special light. The material bonds with the tooth, and can be shaped and polished.

Dentists will usually consider the option of bonding when 1) decayed, 2) chipped, or 3) cracked teeth need to be repaired.

4) Large spaces between teeth can be filled with bonding material, and 5) roots can be protected by bonding after gums recede.

6) Discolored teeth can also be improved using the bonding process, and, since the material is easily shaped, teeth can be made to 7) look longer or just have the general shape changed. Bonding is often used, along with teeth whitening as part of a total smile makeover.

At The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston bonding is a versatile cosmetic dentistry procedure. We’ve treated people from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein, who also come to us for Invisalign clear braces, and much more. Schedule an appointment today!

Oral Cancer: Early Diagnosis Makes A Big Difference

oral cancer screening Houston

Cancer remains one of the scariest diagnoses anyone can get. Oral cancer is especially frightening, because it generally has a higher mortality rate than other cancers. Please keep reading this post from The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston, because we actually have some encouraging things to tell you.

The reason that the death rate for oral cancer tends to be higher than in other types is not because of the disease itself, or that it’s hard to diagnose. The reason is that it is often discovered late in its development. The oral cancer screenings we provide might just save your life, or the life of someone you love.

The symptoms for oral cancer don’t always produce any pain or other obvious symptoms. That’s why it tends to be discovered in later stages. The goal of screenings is to detect any precancerous lesions that could develop into cancer.

When oral cancer is found in its early stages, of course, the chances for successful treatment are at their highest.

If you have any concerns about the state of your oral health, be sure to talk to us about it at The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston. Patients from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein come to our office for general and cosmetic dentistry. Call to schedule an appointment today!

You May Have Gingivitis

Affordable Houston Dentistry

This post from The Gentle Art of Dentistry i Houston is about gingivitis, which is early-stage gum disease.

Gum disease is usually the result of poor brushing and flossing habits. When you don’t brush and floss on a regular basis there is a build-up of plaque, which hardens into a substance called tartar. That’s why we recommend brushing and flossing twice a day. It’s the best way to prevent plaque from building up.

Advanced gum disease develops when gingivitis is not treated. Toxins build up in the plaque on your teeth and invade gum tissue. Not only that, it gets into the bone and ligaments that support the teeth. The teeth can actually become loose.

The good news is that gum disease is treatable.

At The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston we provide gum disease treatment, and have treated patients from throughout East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein. We offer comprehensive general dentistry services. Call for an appointment with us today!
