10 Terrific Tooth Tips From The Gentle Art of Dentistry

cost of dental crowns North Tomball

In addition to cleanings and checkups, The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston likes to share useful information to help you stay on top of your dental health. So without further introduction, here are some terrific tooth tips:

  1. If you have kids and your municipal water supply does not have the recommended level of fluoride, talk to your pediatrician about fluoride supplements. Fluoride strengthens both the teeth you can see and the ones still forming in the jaw.
  2. Set a timer when you brush to make sure you spend at least two minutes thoroughly (but gently!) cleaning all surfaces. Don’t forget your tongue – it provides a cozy home for bacteria.
  3. Floss before you brush so that tooth bristles can better reach between teeth.
  4. If you can’t brush after a meal, chew some sugarless gum with xylitol. Xylitol may curb the growth of bacteria on your teeth to reduce plaque formation.
  5. Eat carbohydrates with meals instead of alone as snacks. More saliva is generated while eating a meal and this can lessen the effects of carbs sitting on your teeth.
  6. An oral fluoride rinse used right before bedtime adds an extra measure of decay deterrence. Fluoride rinses (not traditional mouthwash) work best when swished over teeth for at least thirty seconds after flossing and brushing. After spitting it out, don’t rinse with water.
  7. Let the residue protect and strengthen your enamel all night long. This is especially important for kids – just make sure they don’t swallow it.
  8. If you have diabetes, it is important to understand that unhealthy blood sugar levels can increase your risk of tooth decay and gum disease. We can help you maintain oral health in spite of your condition.
  9. Beware of the dental risks of chronic dry mouth (xerostomia). Continual saliva production is essential for keeping the mouth lubricated, washing the food from tooth surfaces, and neutralizing the acid caused by plaque. Decongestants, blood pressure medications, antidepressants, and painkillers are some of the medications that can cause dry mouth.
  10. Wearing a mouthguard when you participate in sports can prevent tooth injury.

Five Facts About Enamel Erosion

enamel erosion treatment Houston

This post from The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston is about your tooth enamel, and how you can best protect it.

Our teeth work hard and are constantly under assault. It’s no wonder that nature encases them with an armor of enamel—the hardest substance in the body. Sadly, enamel erosion is extremely common, though largely preventable.

Enamel’s chief enemies are acidic foods and beverages. Other factors that can weaken enamel or wear it away are certain medications, teeth grinding, acid reflux, gastrointestinal ailments, chewing ice or other hard substances, and eating disorders.

Here are five quick facts about enamel erosion:

  1. Enamel is unlike many other tissues in the body; once it is gone, it can’t be regenerated.
  2. According to the NIH, 41% of youth already have enamel erosion.
  3. Too-forceful brushing can damage enamel.
  4. Diet sodas, sports drinks, and energy drinks are just as dangerous as sugared sodas.
  5. Dry mouth can weaken enamel because it results in less saliva which helps keep enamel healthy and strong.

Bridging The Gap

cosmetic dental Houston

Do you have a missing tooth that is detracting from your otherwise pleasant smile? At The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston we can fill the gap with a dental bridge, and help you get back your sensational smile!

A dental bridge could be the perfect answer for your missing tooth. A bridge not only restores your smile: it can help you chew and speak properly.

Traditional bridges are strong enough to replace a missing molar. In order to  get one, you need to have natural teeth on each side of the gap left by the missing tooth. These teeth are prepared by removing their  enamel so there is enough room for the crowns that are cemented on top of them. These two crowns support the artificial tooth.

A traditional dental bridge is just one of the tooth replacement options available at The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston. People from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein also come to our practice for cosmetic dentistry, and more. Call for an appointment today!

Healthy Living Starts With A Smile

general dentistry Houston

What comes to mind when you think of healthy living? A dinner plate with a grilled chicken breast and a tossed salad? A cholesterol test that shows your arteries are looking good? If you pictured a white, healthy smile free of cavities, The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston salutes you.

Essential Dental Health

Brushing your teeth every day is essential to good dental health. We recommend brushing twice a day, and with a soft-bristled toothbrush. It’s the best way to keep plaque from building up on your teeth.

Plaque is a sticky film that is formed by bacteria and sugars, and coats the surface of your teeth. It’s a constant process; the stuff is always forming. That’s why you should brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day. It’s important to remove it because plaque is what causes cavities.

Two Minute Warning

Try to brush for two minutes! Some people find that challenging. You can use a timer to help, or listen to some music to take your mind off the brushing. That way the time will fly by, and you may even go beyond that two minute minimum.

We strongly recommend flossing, too. Before or after you brush? The jury is out on that one. We think before is better, but the most important thing is that you do it.

Healthy living really does start with your smile! At The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston we want the best possible dental health for all of our patients. People from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein come to us to for general and cosmetic dentistry, and much more. Schedule your next checkup with us today!

How Do Veneers Create Stunning Smiles?

Veneers Create Stunning Smiles in North TomballPorcelain veneers from The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston have a multitude of applications, allowing you to transform your smile without significant restorative dental work.

Porcelain veneers are paper-thin, tooth-shaped covers that are affixed to the front of teeth. They are made of medical-grade ceramic.

Is your tooth enamel worn and thin? Tooth-colored porcelain veneers have the brilliance and translucency of healthy tooth enamel.

Have your teeth developed uneven edges? This can result from teeth grinding, natural wear and other factors. Veneers are a minimally invasive correction.

Do you have chips or cracks in your teeth? Porcelain veneers provide a flawless tooth surface. Are your teeth yellow or gray? Veneers can fix that, too. They can be made in any shade to perk up your smile while still blending naturally with your other teeth.

At The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston, we would be happy to show you what veneers can do for  you. We’ve used porcelain veneers to improve the smiles of people from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein, who also come to our office for complete general dentistry. Better and Better: The Future of Implants

Dentists are always reminding their patients to brush and floss their teeth. It’s the best way to ensure healthy teeth and gums. But at The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston we know that some of our patients are going to lose a tooth, in spite of everyone’s best efforts. When that happens, we recommend dental implants as a solution.

Humans have experimented with replacing lost teeth for thousands of years. Archaeologists tell us that the first known instance of an implanted tooth comes from the remains of an Egyptian king, whose upper jaw had a copper peg in it. They think it was hammered into place, but that’s an image we do not want to dwell on.

Other ancient cultures experimented with carved bamboo, pieces of stone and steel, and even sea shells. Rest assured, dental implants since then have come a long, long way. Today dental implants are a titanium post that is surgically placed in the patient’s jaw. One implant can support a single artificial tooth. Multiple implants can support a set of dentures.

Dental prognosticators gazing into their crystal balls say that implants are going to get even better, and that improvements aren’t that far down the road. We can expect faster healing and even lower failure rates, which are already pretty low.

At present, the most common cause of failure in dental implants is oral microbial infection. New generations of dental implants are expected to feature a reservoir that slowly releases anti-microbial medicine that prevents the growth of bacteria.

To find out more about dental implants and whether they’re right for you, schedule an appointment with us at The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston. We’ve placed them in patients from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein, who also come to us for complete general dentistry. Call our office today!
