7 Ways Bonding Can Beautify

North Tomball Cosmetic Dentist

Dental bonding is a popular cosmetic dentistry procedure at The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston, but there are many patients who don’t know exactly what it is. In this blog post we explain seven ways dental bonding is used in cosmetic dentistry.

The procedure uses a tooth-colored material that is applied to the teeth while soft, like putty. Next it is hardened with a special light. The material bonds with the tooth, and can be shaped and polished.

Dentists will usually consider the option of bonding when 1) decayed, 2) chipped, or 3) cracked teeth need to be repaired.

4) Large spaces between teeth can be filled with bonding material, and 5) roots can be protected by bonding after gums recede.

6) Discolored teeth can also be improved using the bonding process, and, since the material is easily shaped, teeth can be made to 7) look longer or just have the general shape changed. Bonding is often used, along with teeth whitening as part of a total smile makeover.

At The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston bonding is a versatile cosmetic dentistry procedure. We’ve treated people from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein, who also come to us for Invisalign clear braces, and much more. Schedule an appointment today!

Smile Makeovers: First Things First

smile design Houston

A smile makeover from The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston will give you a brilliant new smile that leads to greater self-confidence and improved dental health. We take a very methodical approach to make sure you’re thrilled with the results.

A smile makeover means combining different cosmetic dentistry techqniues to improve the appearance of your smile. These may include:

  • Teeth whitening
  • Porcelain veneers
  • Dental implants
  • Bonding

Before moving forward with any of the actual procedures, though, we schedule a consultation to evaluate your overall dental health, and to determine what it is about your smile you’d like to improve. We’ll check the state of your teeth and gums, as well as the underlying structure.

We’ll also check to see that your bite is good: that is, the way your upper and lower teeth come together. If we discover any problems we’ll need to address those first.

Some of the evaluations may surprise you. We’ll consider the color and shape of your face, including lips and cheeks, and even your hair. The goal is to find just the right balance between these features and the proposed smile improvements.

From there we’ll develop a plan to address the smile improvements you want to make.

At The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston we’re committed to excellence in cosmetic dentistry. Patients throughout East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein appreciate our orderly approach, and we’re confident you will too! We also offer implant dentistry. Help For Tetracycline Stains At The Gentle Art of Dentistry

Help For Tetracycline And Fluoride Stains At The Gentle Art of Dentistry

There’s hardly anyone out there who wouldn’t like to have a brighter, whiter smile. With professional teeth whitening at The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston, getting the whitest possible smile has never been easier.

You might think that over-the-counter whitening products are a simple shortcut to whiter teeth. It’s true there are lots of whitening gels, strips, and toothpastes at any grocery store. But they won’t deliver the results you’ll see from professional whitening.

Effectiveness is one of the biggest advantages to professional whitening. Another is speed. Imagine walking into our office with dull or yellowed teeth and leaving with a brilliant smile! In most cases teeth whitening can be finished in a single office visit.

When it comes to hard-to-remove stains, like those from tetracycline, the ballgame changes a little. Tetracycline is an antibiotic, and in high doses can permanently stain teeth. Lighter stains can usually be removed with teeth whitening. For more serious discoloration, veneers may be in order. These are thin porcelain shells that are custom-fitted to cover the surfaces of teeth.

Teeth whitening from The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston can give you a stunning new smile. People from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein also come to our office for porcelain veneers, and much more. Call to schedule an appointment today!

10 Terrific Tooth Tips From The Gentle Art of Dentistry

cost of dental crowns North Tomball

In addition to cleanings and checkups, The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston likes to share useful information to help you stay on top of your dental health. So without further introduction, here are some terrific tooth tips:

  1. If you have kids and your municipal water supply does not have the recommended level of fluoride, talk to your pediatrician about fluoride supplements. Fluoride strengthens both the teeth you can see and the ones still forming in the jaw.
  2. Set a timer when you brush to make sure you spend at least two minutes thoroughly (but gently!) cleaning all surfaces. Don’t forget your tongue – it provides a cozy home for bacteria.
  3. Floss before you brush so that tooth bristles can better reach between teeth.
  4. If you can’t brush after a meal, chew some sugarless gum with xylitol. Xylitol may curb the growth of bacteria on your teeth to reduce plaque formation.
  5. Eat carbohydrates with meals instead of alone as snacks. More saliva is generated while eating a meal and this can lessen the effects of carbs sitting on your teeth.
  6. An oral fluoride rinse used right before bedtime adds an extra measure of decay deterrence. Fluoride rinses (not traditional mouthwash) work best when swished over teeth for at least thirty seconds after flossing and brushing. After spitting it out, don’t rinse with water.
  7. Let the residue protect and strengthen your enamel all night long. This is especially important for kids – just make sure they don’t swallow it.
  8. If you have diabetes, it is important to understand that unhealthy blood sugar levels can increase your risk of tooth decay and gum disease. We can help you maintain oral health in spite of your condition.
  9. Beware of the dental risks of chronic dry mouth (xerostomia). Continual saliva production is essential for keeping the mouth lubricated, washing the food from tooth surfaces, and neutralizing the acid caused by plaque. Decongestants, blood pressure medications, antidepressants, and painkillers are some of the medications that can cause dry mouth.
  10. Wearing a mouthguard when you participate in sports can prevent tooth injury.

At The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston we want all our patients to take good care of their teeth. Brush and floss daily, and see us for a checkup every six months. Services include dental implants, complete general dentistry and much more. Patients from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein trust us with their dental health. Schedule your next exam today!

Five Facts About Enamel Erosion

enamel erosion treatment Houston

This post from The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston is about your tooth enamel, and how you can best protect it.

Our teeth work hard and are constantly under assault. It’s no wonder that nature encases them with an armor of enamel—the hardest substance in the body. Sadly, enamel erosion is extremely common, though largely preventable.

Enamel’s chief enemies are acidic foods and beverages. Other factors that can weaken enamel or wear it away are certain medications, teeth grinding, acid reflux, gastrointestinal ailments, chewing ice or other hard substances, and eating disorders.

Here are five quick facts about enamel erosion:

  1. Enamel is unlike many other tissues in the body; once it is gone, it can’t be regenerated.
  2. According to the NIH, 41% of youth already have enamel erosion.
  3. Too-forceful brushing can damage enamel.
  4. Diet sodas, sports drinks, and energy drinks are just as dangerous as sugared sodas.
  5. Dry mouth can weaken enamel because it results in less saliva which helps keep enamel healthy and strong.

  • Dental implants. These marvels of modern dentistry are titanium posts inserted into your jaw, where they fuse with the bone. An artificial tooth is mounted onto the post. Implants look and function like natural teeth.
  • Crowns. Crowns are often placed on top of a decayed tooth, or after a root canal or other procedure. They protect and stabilize what is left of the original tooth. They too look and function like a natural tooth.

Bridging The Gap

cosmetic dental Houston

Do you have a missing tooth that is detracting from your otherwise pleasant smile? At The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston we can fill the gap with a dental bridge, and help you get back your sensational smile!

A dental bridge could be the perfect answer for your missing tooth. A bridge not only restores your smile: it can help you chew and speak properly.

Traditional bridges are strong enough to replace a missing molar. In order to  get one, you need to have natural teeth on each side of the gap left by the missing tooth. These teeth are prepared by removing their  enamel so there is enough room for the crowns that are cemented on top of them. These two crowns support the artificial tooth.

A traditional dental bridge is just one of the tooth replacement options available at The Gentle Art of Dentistry in Houston. People from East Spring, West Cypress, and Klein also come to our practice for cosmetic dentistry, and more. Call for an appointment today!
